10. Zoo Praha, Prague, Czech Republic
Offering some of the best value for money, great exhibits, intimate atmosphere, and great diversity of animals, Prague Zoo is definitely one of the best zoos in Europe. A mere 5 Euros will give you all-day access to 111 acres that houses approximately 4600 animals representing 630 different species. Highlights include the Indonesia Jungle and Monkey Island.


9. Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Nagoya, Japan
For a complete nature experience, head to Nagoya’s Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens. This 150-acres park, dating back to 1937, offers a fabulous botanical garden, amusement park, and, of course, a world-class zoo. Boasting around 550 species, the most popular include lions, tigers, polar bears, elephants, giraffes, and koalas.

Switzerland’s largest (30 acres) and oldest (established in 1874) zoo is an impressive all-day activity for any tourist. Basel Zoo is foremost known for its outstanding breeding programs; particularly with cheetahs, okapi, pygmy hippos, and flamingos. It is also renowned for its natural habitats that include, Ethosa exhibit inspired by African national parks, Monkey house, and an impressive acquarium.

San Diego Zoo, smack in the middle of centrally-located Balboa Park, is one of most stunning and diverse city zoos in the world. This rolling landscape of exotic plants, winding pathways, and natural exhibits occupies 100 acres and offers a welcome respite from the exhilarating atmosphere of San Diego. 6. National Zoological Gardens, Pretoria, South Africa
Since its inception in 1899, 173-acre Pretoria’s Zoo has grown into South Africa’s finest zoo. It houses 97 mammal species, 161 bird species, 279 fish species, 106 reptile species and seven amphibian species for a total of approximately 4500 animals. Apart from the atmospheric pathways, lush greenery, and natural exhibits, the park also features South Africa’s largest aquarium.

At 265 acres, this sprawling city zoo is surely one of the largest zoos in the world.In addition to its impressive size the zoo features pleasantly landscaped and spacious exhibits and, of course, thousands of animals. Popularly known as the National Zoo, this DC landmark is one of the oldest zoos in the United States (founded in 1889), and as part of the Smithsonian Institution, admission is always free! The 163-acre property is easily accessible via the DC metro system, and offers all-day educational exhibits, activities, and lots of animal viewing. The most popular residents include the giant pandas Sumatran tigers, lions, sloth bears, red pandas, and Asian elephants. Almost 1/5th of the animals are endangered or critically threatened.

The oldest zoo in the world is still holding strong in its position as one of the world’s leading zoos. Established in 1752(!), this centrally-located zoo maintains an intricate balance of keeping historical charm with world-class ultra-modern facilities. The baroque architecture is complemented by some of the most spacious and beautifully kept animal exhibits in the world that homes nearly 500 animal species. Highlights include the Siberian tigers, jaguars, orangutans, koalas, and the world-famous giant pandas.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom covers an astounding 500 acres and is consequently Disney’s largest theme park in the world. Animal Kingdom subtly combines a theme park with a zoo, yet you quickly realize that this is neither. The lush landscape, rivers, waterfalls, and natural animal exhibits create an atmosphere of walking through pristine nature. The spacious exhibits housing 1,700 animals representing 250 different species are best viewed from safari-style vehicles or rafts.


1. Singapore Zoo, Singapore
The open concept of Singapore Zoo makes this one of the most spectacularly beautiful and accessible zoos in the world. In this 70-acre rainforest landscape, all animals are kept in large landscaped open air areas and are separated from visitors by ‘hidden’ barriers that include vegetation, streams, moats, and rocks. The open concept is further enhanced by small monkeys, birds, turtles, and even orangutans sharing the pathways with throngs of visitors. Apart from highlights such as the white tigers, lemurs, polar bears, kangaroos, orangutans, and Asian elephants, the zoo also features several endangered species like the Malayan tiger, the proboscis monkey, the white rhino, and the Komodo dragon.
